Probably 75% of my time is spent assisting with internet related issues. This includes lost internet connections and e-mail problems. Below is some information that relates to the more commonly used internet service providers e.g. BT and Orange. If you have additional information, that you wish to send me for inclusion then please do.

Settings for :

Included below is where to find those elusive e-mail and internet files that should be backed up.

Location of :

Customer email format : user.name@ntlworld.com

Outgoing Mail Server address : smtp.ntlworld.com
Outgoing Mail Server type : SMTP

Incoming Mail Server address : pop.ntlworld.com

Broadband customers please note: @fs should not be used in email or webspace settings

Your email address is your choice of name, followed by the '@' sign and your email username, eg mail@yourname.orangehome.co.uk
You can use as many email addresses before the '@' sign as you like, eg bob@yourname.orangehome.co.uk, elisabeth@yourname.orangehome.co.uk

server settings

email server: POP3
pop server (incoming): pop.orangehome.co.uk
smtp server (outgoing): smtp.orangehome.co.uk

For broadband : Account name = first part of your email address (before '@') e.g. joe.bloggs @btinternet.com

For some of the dial-up pre paid packages you may have to put 1470 before the number it dials. This is for people who have permanent number blocking and is because the service needs to verify the phone number that is calling is legitimate.


Location of e-mail files in Outlook Express :

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{BAC0EF8E-BC5F-4676-A526-5940F1A7FDCE}\Microsoft

These files end in .dbx and ALL of them should be backed up

Note : The long list of letters and numbers will vary machine to machine.

Location of e-mail files in Outlook :

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst

Note : This database is in a .pst format

 

Location of address book :

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\User Name

 

Location of Internet Explorer favourites (bookmarks) :

C:\Documents and Settings\User Name

Location of Mozilla Firefox bookmarks :

C:\Documents and settings\User name\application data\mozilla\profiles\default\********.slt\

Note : The ******** means a random string of 8 characters.
